Old Europe Meddles Again
Sun April 27th, 2003 23:48 MSTA war crimes complaint will be filed in Belgium shortly against Gen. Tommy Franks and other U.S. warriors. If this results in arrest warrants, any of those individuals setting foot in Belgium could be arrested. In reality, this is one more attempt by Old Europe and the UN internationalists to hobble the United States and force us to only operate under UN approval.
What a surprise! We could never have guessed.
It is no longer possible for the forces of good to take any action without threats from the emasculated Old Europe. Everything must be to a perfect standard that cannot be met, and must be approved in advance by Old Europe bureaucrats along with their dictator friends in the United Nations.
The Bush administration has reacted angrily and threatened Belgium with “diplomatic consequences” if a court takes up the complaint. This is appropriate, but not enough.
Sometime in the future, when the US has the inevitable internationalist touchy-feelie leftist government, those same officials could be in personal jeopardy. Following the precedent of the Pinoche case, the officials could be arrested in some other country - perhaps Britain - based on a warrant issued by a single judge in Belgium (or Spain, or wherever).
We should have laws requiring the administration to take severe measures against any country attacking our officials or former officials for actions taken while in service of the United States. The United States is the world’s hegemon, making us the favorite target of terrorism. We cannot adequately defend ourselves if our officials have to constantly fear legal persecution.
