Saddam’s Last Evil Act?

With the probable death of Saddam’s sons, and the noose hopefully closing on the old man, we may see Saddam’s final act – use of WMD’s in Iraq or the US.

That Saddam is capable of acts of vengeance is well known. His reckless attempt on the life of former president George H. W. Bush is an example. It was an act of war that would have led to Saddam’s destruction with a less feckless president than Bill Clinton.

The CIA, in its partially declassified National Intelligence Estimate stated the obvious: that Saddam, facing inevitable loss of power or death, might trigger mega-terror attacks in the US.

These would probably use chemical weapons, although it is possible that extremely lethal biological agents could be used. A malignant narcissist like Saddam (or Kim Jong Il) places no value on any life other than his own. Such a person would certainly be emotionally likely to want to use a “doomsday weapon” – one capable of or intented to kill millions or billions of people.

Of course, there is the problem of getting his intelligence agents to release such a weapon. Few are likely to knowlingly and willing do so, but they could be deceived about what they were using. There are a few other practical covert operations problems… What if the agent is discovered before the act – say, while Saddam still believes he has a chance to regain power? What if the agent decides that it would be against his best interests to act, once Saddam was gone? What if the agent went rogue and used the weapon too soon? These are the same issues faced by nuclear strategists regarding their control of weapons release.

It is unlikely that Saddam has a true doomsday bug, since such an organism may not be possible. It is likely that Iraq had smallpox samples, and it is possible that they created more lethal and virulent versions.

It is also possible (although no public evidence exists) that they could have an engineered a flu as nasty as or nastier than the “Spanish Flu” of 1918, which would be far more deadly in the first world. However, the knowledge to do this is just now becoming available, with the sequencing of that flu strain.

Either would be very deadly in the third and fourth world, and could be extremely deadly even in the first world.

Iraq is known to have possessed Anthrax, although there is disagreement over whether they were able to weaponize it. Anthrax is a good terror weapon, but not a doomsday weapon because it is not very contagious.

In any case, we may be approaching the time when Saddam’s final malicious act is performed.

It will be interesting to see if the terror alert level is raised.

On the other hand, his final act may have been to set fire to the EIffel tower. Nah…. just a coincidence ;-)
