Dogs and Global Warming

Fri October 31st, 2003 12:45 MST

My dogs had a major triumph today. First, a meter reader came. They barked furiously and he went away. They were very proud.

Then the garbage man came. Again they barked furiously and he too went away. They were even more proud.

This happens every week and is a great source of satisfaction to them.

Since the mid 19th century, CO2 in the atmosphere has risen 30%. Surface temperatures have risen about 1 degree. Environmentalists thus tell us that putting CO2 into the atmosphere caused the temperature to rise.

They too are very proud!

CBS to Smear Ronald Reagan

Tue October 28th, 2003 10:17 MST

The left, self righteous advocates of peace and cooperation, never forgive and they never forget their hatred of their enemies. Now, as Ronald Reagan, deep into Alzheimers, is unable to defend himself, they reportedly are preparing a merciless attack on him and his ideas, to be aired on CBS during sweeps season.

This has resulted in a movement to boycott the advertisers of this typical Hollywood left wing product. The boycott web site is BoycottCBS.com.

“Environmental Racism” in the Desert?

Sun October 26th, 2003 17:41 MST

THERE’S NOBODY THERE - HOW CAN THERE BE ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM?

Recently I read that a refinery project proposed for the almost empty desert near Mobile, Arizona is being opposed on the grounds of “environmental racism.” Apparently the local press never bothered to do any research. Otherwise they would have reported that Mobile is has only 33 people in the vicinity, none of them closer than a mile to the site, and the vast majority are white!

ONSITE RESEARCH

Having driven to the area decades ago and seen no population at all, I was rather surprised at the implication that a minority community had sprung up. Thus, armed with a camera and GPS, an expedition was mounted to investigate this amazing development. The pictures are shown throughout this article. In addition, a little web research was undertaken.

Here is a picture of the pristine environment about to be protected by this doctrine:

Naturally, it is primarily used to block progress - as a useful legal and propaganda weapon in the armory of radical environmentalists and NIMBY’s. It’s especially useful since so few people understand it, much less see its effects. In accord with the idea of blocking any progress, the Clinton administration created an EPA organization (NEJAC) to ensure compliance with this dubious doctrine.

Conquest’s Second Law of Politics

Sun October 26th, 2003 11:03 MST

Many conservatives are surprised at how many previously non-political organizations (such as mainstream protestant churches) have adopted strongly left wing attitudes. Others are surprised at how formerly single purpose moderate organizations (such as conservation organizations) have become radical in their original purpose and have issued leftist pronouncements far outside of their organizational interest.

Hence we have radical environmentalists taking over conservation organizations, professional organizations making anti-war, pro-abortion and anti-conservative statements which have nothing to do with their goals (or for that matter, with the interests of their original membership).

In Honor of Today’s Peace Parade

Sat October 25th, 2003 20:54 MST

In honor of today’s pro-Saddam“peace” rally in DC, I have lifted the following P.J. O’Rourke quote:

“How come,” I asked Andy, “whenever something upsets the Left, you see immediate marches and parades and rallies with signs already printed and rhyming slogans already composed, whereas whenever something upsets the Right, you see two members of the Young Americans for Freedom waving a six-inch American flag?”

“We have jobs,” said Andy.

Do Not Call and the First Amendment

Wed October 22nd, 2003 22:56 MST

Much talk and a few judicial rulings have been made about the impact of the first amendment on the Do Not Call law. Even Edward at Zonitics gets it wrong this time! [NOTE: 10/28 Edward is rendering his opinion of how the court will rule, not his personal views. Hence my characterization of his article is incorect]

The important part of the law is not about the speech, it is about the circumstances under which one can be disturbed by a ringing telephone. As with many other laws, the *purpose* of the call is a valid discriminator (whether we agree with the chosen purposes or not) as is the identity of the caller.

I don’t see any first amendment issue here until the conversation has been started by mutual agreement by both sides. Nowhere in the first amendment do I see wording that I *must* listen to someone, nor do I see anything that implies that if I *must* listen to one group of people, I have to listen to all.

Ringing my phone is not speech. It is like ringing my doorbell. It is trespassing and use of my resources unless I want it or you have a good and legal reason to do it!

Behind the Campaign to Give Felons the Right to Vote

Sat October 18th, 2003 13:41 MST

Most Americans recognize that one of the punishments for committing felonies, as opposed to misdemeanors, is the permanent loss of a number of rights. Included in these are the right to possess firearms and the right to vote.

But there is more to this story than one might think…

Bay Area… Smarter than the Rest of Us

Sat October 18th, 2003 12:47 MST

A striking anomaly in the California Recall election was the voting pattern in the San Francisco Bay Area. Also striking is the arrogance of our betters who live there:

Bay Area voters opposed the recall by 63 percent to 37 percent — while Californians as a whole voted to oust Davis 55 percent to 45 percent. Without the nine Bay Area counties, the recall would have passed by 20 percentage points instead of its 10-point margin.

Meanwhile, the region’s voters gave Schwarzenegger 33 percent of the vote as a replacement candidate — while statewide, he garnered 49 percent. Without the Bay Area, Schwarzenegger would have earned 53 percent of the vote

Outstanding New Baghdad Blog

Sat October 18th, 2003 11:07 MST

I have found an outstanding new Baghdad blog, entitled Healing Iraq. This blog, so far only a few posts long, has the most informative posts and the most positive attitude of any of the active Iraqi blogs.

The blogger describes himself:

My name is Zeyad. I’m 24, male. I live in Baghdad, Iraq. Also lived in the UK prior to the first Gulf war. I work as a dentist.

Check it out!
