Americans Show Support for Troops

Posted By John Moore on December 6, 2003

My daughter lives in Baltimore, which is where troops arrive from Iraq and Afghanistan for R&R (Rest and Relaxation).

On her most recent flight there, every passenger in first class gave up their seats to the troops! The gratitude of all on the aircraft was enthusiastically expressed.

On an Amtrak trip yesterday, civilians in the Cafe Car competed for the honor of buying beer for the troops there. Too many civilians, not enough soldiers! Lots of thanks and “High Fives” were also given.

You may not see it on the news, but these incidents are happening all over the country every day.

This is how it ought to be. Thank God for the troops who die instead of us; thank God for the troops who give themselves for us. Just plain and simple thank God for the troops!

    Hearts & Minds

Useful Fools has some heartwarming anecdotes of the interaction between our troops and the civillians who appreciate the sacrifice. Nothing you’d hear about in the mainstream media, mind you. So,…

The best part of these stories is that they seem almost ordinary to me.

I volunteer a couple of nights a week at the USO in O’Hare airport. I see military men and women who are traveling to and from just about everywhere (it seems like you always have to change planes at O’Hare). Just about every one of them wil have a story like this… from the one woman who didn’t take my offered sandwich because a family had insisted on buying her dinner at the airport to the young guys who avoided having to spend the night in the airport because strangers paid for a hotel room for them.

The amazing thing to me is that these stories are never told by the media. I don’t know why that suprises me… but it does.

I returned home for R&R five weeks ago. I had never been to New York City, so on a whim my wife and I decide to go. First, one of the Helmsley Hotels gave us a GREAT rate. Second, our first night out started at the Plaza Hotel Bar. We met a Wall Street Attorney who refused to let us pay for a thing. Then he called ahead to two pheneomenal restaurants and picked up the tab…and then demanded we go the next two evenings. All we had to do was “take care of the staff,” which we did enthusiastically.

Bottom Line: I’m sitting in Tikrit now with a smile on my face as I type this; and my wife and I shared a trip to NYC that we’ll never forget.

Oh yeah–New York is my favorite city, by far. God Bless it and America.
