John,
First time here and would like to express my appreciation of your many great comments on Roger’s site. I have heard not one comment come from you that this ex-liberal disagrees with. I was talking to my still very liberal brother who feels Bush is toast and Kerry is going to take him apart and his Vietnam Vet status will somehow insulate Kerry from being vulnerable on War/Security issues. Me personally I don’t by it because that is to assume it is a political issue and not a serious life and death issue and I think Bush will argue from that stand point. Also this President has a tendency to stand back and let all attacks and arguments be exhausted before he comes out swinging. I just can’t wait (I voted Gore) because I know they have thrown it all at Bush already, what else is there to throw? More old drunk driving charges? We’ll see what Bush comes up with, there is much to unveil about Kerry. I think the mistake the press and the Democrats are making when they say Bush is vulnerable is Kerry feels so mainstream to them. I voted for Carter, Mondale, and Dukakis. I know what can and will be done to Kerry. Edwards would be tougher but as my Sales Manager (a Republican from North Carolina with an accent like Edwards) said, “Don’t you worry the good people of the South ain’t about to trade in a good old Republican from Texas for some slick Trial Lawyer Democrat, that’s just not going to happen.”
As for a running mate?
I think the Republicans should find every picture of Ted Kennedy and John Kerry together, hugging, back slapping, holding hands, opening doors for each other as they enter the back-rooms of Left-Liberal orthodoxy, as this is done they should show a running list of Kerry’s and Kennedy’s legislative assaults on the Military, Intelligence, Right to Bear Arms, Religion, etc. etc. etc… Oh and the Gay Marriage, I’ll admit I don’t care as much about this one but if the Republicans have their Willie Horton, this is it. Who is vulnerable here?
John also off-topic In reading your bio you said:
Oh, and I almost forgot! Politically I’m a Conservative [also known as a Classical Liberal](I haven’t figured on which type of conservative: paleocon, neocon, libertariancon, etc.) and a big fan of Ronald Reagan. And I haven’t forgiven those of you who voted for Clinton and her husband!!!
First whether you chose to forgive me or not, I’m sure sorry, not to make excuses but when one Jewish guy is raised by socialist-liberals and has marxist grandparents from Germany, that is a lot to overcome. Just be grateful my oldest daughter is sixteen and branded herself a neo-con well before I ever did myself. So the curse has been broken in my home. As for conservatism from reading your comments I’ll take a stab.
paleo-con: a stubborn knee jerk conservative? You can answer that on your own. Are you againsts free trade? I view paleo-cons as having a tendancy towards isolationism and being against free trade. Pat Buchanan is a poster child for this. If you agree with Pat on most things but are for free trade and against being isolationist than you are a mainstream conservative my friend.
libertarian-con: This is one where the title must explain something. Small government with a conservative bias. This actually would fit a Western Sage-Brush Republican for sure, sound like it might fit. This is Barry Goldwater for sure.
neo-con: This is me in the full pejorative sense of the word, “A liberal educated Jew mugged by reality” This one I understand at a gut level. These are “activist conservatives” and why so many ex-progressive liberals like myself find this the obvious route to conservatism because it doesn’t change the goal, just the means. “Neo-Liberals with boots” is also apropos. We want to proselytize the ideas as a means to bring about justice. So instead of exporting Marxism, we want to export Freedom. This is achieved through Free-Trade and Foreign Policy, we as they say “break bread” with social-conservatives because we are moralists and patriotic. This is me, I doubt it is you, but it does bring us together on most issues. Which brings me to…
Ronald Reagan:
All conservatives love him because he embodied all of the above. He is a hero of the neo-cons because he was in fact a neo-con, he introduced neo-liberalism (Milton Friedman) and made it mainstream. He was a liberal “mugged by reality” and cold warrior that recognized the evils of communism and the growing bankruptcy of the left concerning such things. For me this is in the very same spirit that many of us “War Liberals” recognize the War on Terrorism for the seriousness that it is, and find our disgust and lack of seriousness from the left. He is a hero of the libertarian-cons because he defined the government properly for what it should be, strong military, small and efficient, and non-meddling where unnecessary. Paleo-cons loved him because he was an America is First and extremely Patriotic and not ashamed of religion.
Looks like you’ve been spammed, John. Time to update the Blacklist.
If he wants a skillful and knowledgable VP who also adds some regional balance, a good choice would be Leon Panetta. As they say, “he’s tanned, he’s rested.”
Leon is in California and is a former director of OMB, a congressman who was widely respected and a chief of staff to Clinton. He seemed to avoid getting any of the Monicagate taint.
I agree with Brian’s post about Leon Panetta. He would be a great choice because:
1.) He’s well respected in California (as many believed he would have been better dem. gov than Davis)
2.) He’s got a solid economic reputation- considered “the man who balanced the budget” for Clinton admin.– this would bring great firepower to Kerry’s argement against Bush’s lackluster job/economy performance and horrible budget decisions.
3.) Clean and honest politician- tough to find anyone in Washington on either side of the aisle to criticize him.
Kerry- Panetta gets my vote..
i think john kerry should pick john edwards as his running mate. he should also pick wesley clark as secretary of defense. He sould also have everyone that run against him to speak at the convention together they can beat the president in the fall.
