Dangerous Veterans (to Kerry)

Dangerous Political Operatives

The Vietnam combat veterans in this picture, standing in front of the statue at the Vietnam War Memorial, have been characterized as “Nixon Stooges” (it’s that hand reaching from the grave, I guess), “Bush mercenaries” (hope the pay is good), McCarthyites (another hand, another grave, an old left-wing trope), having close ties to President Bush’s re-election campaign, being part of a Republican smear machine (a Rube Goldberg device hidden in a secure bunker deep under the White House), being war criminals (no jokes for that one), and who knows what else. They are ( left to right) Michael (boats) Turley, BM2, Ken Briggs, EN2, and Terry Boone, RD2.

These must be some bad hombres, but they sure look like ordinary Americans to me. On the other hand, I know one of them, so I didn’t learn how wicked they were until the mainstream media told me.

It’s frightening! What would happen if one of these dangerous men moved into my town? Would they have to register as Political Offenders? Would I know how to avoid them?

I don’t see fancy Washington suits appropriate for Republican operatives. I don’t see any Bush PR flacks telling them what to say. Where are the big bucks that mercenaries get?

All I see is Americans who bravely served their country long ago, risking their lives in Swift Boats during the Vietnam War.

There must be more to this story….

[ Let me make it clear that any political affiliation these gentlemen have is unrelated to their feelings and recommendations about John Kerry. The previous part of this post was sarcasm - something almost unknown to the Kerry campaign and Kerry himself. One of the gentleman in the picture is a Democrat, another an Independent, and I don't know about the third.]

The Press Conference, Unprecedented in American History

On May 7, these men and other members of Swift Boat Veterans For Truth held a press conference in which John Kerry’s entire Vietnam chain of command reported their conclusion that Kerry was not qualified to serve as Commander In Chief (President).

In addition, over 200 of their members, including 19 of the 23 officers who served with Kerry in Vietnam, signed a letter to John Kerry stating:

Senator Kerry

We write from our common heritage as veterans of duty aboard Swift Boats in the Vietnam War. Indeed, you should note that a substantial number of those men who served directly with you during your four month tour in Vietnam have signed this letter.

It is our collective judgment that, upon your return from Vietnam, you grossly and knowingly distorted the conduct of the American soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen of that war (including a betrayal of many of us, without regard for the danger your actions caused us). Further, we believe that you have withheld and/or distorted material facts as to your own conduct in this war.

We believe you continue this conduct today, albeit by changing from an anti-war to a “war hero” status. You now seek to clad yourself in the very medals that you disdainfully threw away in the early years of your political career. In the process, we believe you continue a deception as to your own conduct through such tactics as the disclosure of only carefully screened portions of your military records. Both then and now, we have concluded that you have deceived the public, and in the process have betrayed honorable men, to further your personal political goals.

Your conduct is such as to raise substantive concerns as to your honesty and your ability to serve, as you currently seek, as Commander-in-Chief of the military services.

It is vital that the American public have as much information as possible about candidates for President of the United States. In various ways, you have rightly called upon President Bush to be fully accountable and to provide full disclosure. In the same spirit, now that you are the presumptive nominee of your Party, we believe it is incumbent upon you to make your total military record open to the American people.

Specifically, we the undersigned formally request that you authorize the Department of the Navy to independently release your military records (through your execution of Standard Form 180), complete and unaltered, including your military medical records. Further, we call upon you to correct the misconceptions your campaign seeks to create as to your conduct while in Vietnam. Permit the American public the opportunity to assess your military performance upon the record, and not upon campaign rhetoric.

Senator Kerry, we were there. We know the truth. We have been silent long enough. The stakes are too great, not only for America in general but, most importantly, for those who have followed us into service in Iraq and Afghanistan. We call upon you to provide a full, accurate accounting of your conduct in Vietnam.

Respectfully

Several speakers also called into question Kerry’s first Purple Heart, one of three which allowed him to leave Vietnam after an unusually short time in combat.

Audio and video of the conference are available at:

Mainstream Media Distortion of This Event

This was a historical event, unprecedented in American history. The Associated Press did not consider it even worthy of coverage. In the small articles that were published, and which carried only a small portion of the charges and statements, these brave men were decried as “Nixon Stooges” and Bush mercenaries; they were compared to Senator McCarthy (ironic since the techniques used against these veterans smack of McCarthyism), accused of having close ties to President Bush’s reelection campaign (untrue), and called part of a “Republican smear machine.””

Many reports of the press conference, in addition to omitting important details, attempted to downplay the charges and requests by shooting the messengers: the Swift Boat Veterans. This was done by noting that some of the officers had defended John Kerry during his 1996 re-election campaign, but are opposing him now. Implied was that his former comrades had switched from supporting Kerry to opposing him for political reasons.

In reality, the defense in 1996 was to counter charges against Kerry’s being a war criminal, which (ironically) he had admitted in his false testimony before the Senate in 1971, as part of his thesis that war crimes were United States policy. They were defending a fellow soldier’s honor against what they considered an attack on his battlefield accomplishments. But now they are saying that, whatever medals Kerry earned on the battlefield, he is not competent to be the Commander in Chief. There is no contradiction between these two times and two viewpoints.

One of these officers, George Elliot ironically pointed out that the positions were consistent:

”I find a couple of things ironic. I stood alongside John Kerry along with Admiral Zumwalt and Adrian Lonsdale in 1996 to defend him against the false accusation of — Guess what? — atrocities and war crimes,” Elliott said. ”That wasn’t true then; that’s why I stood with him. The second irony is, in 1971 . . . he claimed that the 500,000 men in Vietnam in combat were all villains. There were no heroes. In 2004, one hero from the Vietnam War has appeared running for president.”

”It galls one to think about it,” Elliott said.

Others attempted to discredit the group by that old McCarthyite trope of guilt by association – that the “news conference was handled by a public relations firm with ties to the Republican Party and President Bush.”

The media’s astonishingly poor treatment of this event was characterized as “The Media Iron Curtain” by one analyst.

Imagine if a large number of Texas National Guardsmen came forward and said anything close to this about George Bush!

Non-Partisan Anti-Kerry Veteran Groups

It is a fact that many of the Vietnam Veterans groups, such as Swift Boat Veterans For Truth, Veterans Against Kerry, and Vietnam Vets for the Truth are non-partisan. They oppose Kerry, but their membership need not support Bush, and are often Democrats. The Kerry campaign, as evident from above, tries to discredit them by paint their members as Republican partisans or operatives.

I don’t even know the party affiliations of any of the officers except O’Neil (the person who had to take over Kerry’s Swift Boat after Kerry left Vietnam Early), who happens to be a (gasp) Republican, and myself, also (gasp) a Republican.

Finally, The Media vs. The Truth

If you want to know what is going on in the world, don’t trust the mainstream media – the big 3 TV networks, CNN, the major daily newspapers and weekly “news” magazines.. This event should make that clear. Main stream media staffers have their own beliefs, and are pressing them on the rest of us. They want George Bush to lose, and will do anything in their power to insure that, from hiding negative facts about John Kerry(such as this event) to painting the War on Terror in the worst of terms.

This is some tin-foil crackpot conspiracy theory – no conspiracy is needed. The normal human group-think tendency, plus the consistent viewpoint in journalism schools, reinforced by like-minded peers and friends, combined with the special position that journalists have given themselves in society are sufficient to perpetuate a surprisingly uniform attitude.

You can find some balance on Fox News, some on conservative talk radio, and a lot in blogs. But don’t be surprised if your friends and neighbors are spouting the Big Lie told by the evening news, never realizing that they are being fed a poisonous diet of continuous anti-Bush propaganda.

Since I am one of the Swift Boat Veterans AGAINST Kerry in the photo from DC Memorial Day weekend I can assure anyone that there is no political agenda behind our activities against Kerry’s bid for the White House other than the fact that he is unfit to be President. Factually he is not legally free to hold public office of any nature according to the Constitution and Title 18 of the U.S. Code. Personally I am a registered Independent and one of the others I happen to know is a Democrat. We paid our own way and I wrote and financed our information sheets and our press releases, which have been virtually ignored.
For those who may be interested Kerry tried to sneak down to the Wall May 30th unannounced. One Vietnam Veteran Against Kerry happened upon Kerry talking to a group of families with children at the Wall. The Veteran informed Kerry that he was there to escort him away from the Wall, “because he [Kerry] had no right to be there.” Kerry responded by flipping the Vet the “bird,” right there in the Wall and in front of families with kids The Vet responded, “Very Presidential.” Kerry then got out of there with his Secret Service agents. Run and hide is Kerry’s answer when he can’t rationally defend his behavior. Just as he planned his trip to Vietnam, i.e., grab as much hardware as he could apply for himself and get the heck out of there. Then come home and betray his oath and those who served and were serving by his activities and lies testified to before the Congress. Why do you think he won’t sue any of us for libel or slander? Why do you think he has removed his public appearance itenterary from his website? Why are his stooges constantly having to remove information Kerry claims about his 4 month tour in Vietnam and take out parts of his service record that was posted? Because he knows that he can’t bullshit those of us who served on Swift Boats. We did whole tours and more and know his lies and his treachery upon return to the States. And before this campaign is over the whole world will know.

Mike Turley’s comments have reinforced questions I’ve long harbored regarding John Kerry’s military citations.

Audie Murphy, so the records say, spent some three years overseas during WWII, and earned 33 citations, many of which are of the highest in military distinction.

As I wrote in an earlier post regarding last week’s death of author William Manchester, the man was twice gravely wounded while in action during Operation “Iceberg,” in 1945 (the battle for Okinawa was the costliest campaign of the entire Pacific War; 13,000 American dead in 82 days of combat), and was ultimately awarded two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, and a Navy Cross for gallantry. (Manchester’s unit, the Sixth Marine Division, accounted for 75 percent of Japanese fatalities on Okinawa, and bore the brunt of some of the worst fighting seen in World War II.)

When considering men like Murphy and Manchester–in conjunction with John Kerry and his combat awards–I confess that I’m stymied as to how Kerry could have won so much, so quickly, and at so little physical cost. (Doctors who treated Kerry overseas have publicly volunteered information suggesting that at least one of Kerry’s wounds was so superficial, it scarcely ‘rated’ a Purple Heart.)

I’m not arguing that Kerry is not entitled to his medals, providing he earned them ’squarely.’ It’s just that I have to wonder–given Kerry’s close affiliation with the Kennedy family, his undeniable wealth, his pre-war proclivity toward politics, and his ambitious personality–is it possible that someone long ago ‘embellished’ the man’s military record in hope of ‘building’ an extraordinary political resume for future use?

To be entirely honest, I began to scrutinize Kerry’s military accomplishments only after the Dems’ began their assault on Bush’s SRB in the days preceding the exceptionally rancorous November 2003 primaries.

If Kerry is indeed a ‘true hero,’ then far be it from me to besmirch him here, publicly, before thousands of men and women whom have served honorably and with distinction. Though if the sitting president is considered fair game for inquiry by the media, then Kerry is equally open to similar study.

I wish to offend no one, here. Hope I haven’t done so with this post. And I truly appreciate Mike’s previous entry. Very eye-opening, yet not so surprising if you lived during the dark history of the Weathermen and VVAW.

I served on PBRs in River Division 593 1969-1970 and I for one deeply resent kerry’s war crimes testimony. I served a full tour and never saw any war crimes and I belive I saw far more combat then kerry ever did. I will mention that I watched a lt. commander get a silver star for a fire fight I was in with him. his only contribution was to get in the way and endanger those of us doing our jobs.

Isn’t amazing how the LEFT, those pinkos on the other side have a knack of putting words together, ie, Nixon Stooges, and Bush Mercenaries, but the best one of all is the Republican Operatives, as if they are running some covert agenda for the White House.
The first thing they try to do is to discredit someone who disagrees with them I mean G-d forbid someone has a different opinion than John ‘Botox’ Kerry.
These arrogant half-wits haven’t a clue what is really going on out there and cant imagine how anyone could possibly disagree with there annointed candidate to return us all to ‘Camelot’, which proves only one thing for sure, they are living in a fantasy world, built on lies and deciet and it is starting to come crashing down on them. AS Ross was wont to say, soon you will hear a giant sucking soundd as they implode around their annointed, self-proclaimed War Criminal …er hero, .. I will applaud when it happens.

PS, IF those ‘Operatives’ ever come to my neighborhood, Vienna, Ohio, I buy the first case.

All the charges about Kerry’s record being brought up now that he is the nominee is purely political. And, the only proof I need is this: had there been even the hint of a question of Kerry’s war record in 1970, 1971, the good folks of the Nixon Administration would have discovered it and spread it loud and clear. The fact that they didn’t is irrefutable proof that these charges are baseless.

Incorrect logic. During that time, Nixon was severely constrained by the political situation. It was hard for him to do that sort of thing. Furthermore, he didn’t know.

But now that Kerry is running for President, those who knew him in Vietnam, and those who are aware of his anit-war lies want to bring the subject up.

We have waited 35 years, and the bastard who slimed us suddently appeared on the national stage. Do you think we are going to just ignore that, knowing what we know?

John Kerry flirted with treason. He accused every one of us of atrocities and of being psychological screwed up because of ‘Nam. He made many more vicious slanders of us and the nation.

What goes around, comes around. Nothing we have said comes close to the level of vicious accusations made by Kerry in 1971 and re-affirmed by him just last year. Kerry slimed ever Vietnam Vet. There is nothing we could say that would make up for what the guy did to us.

If it turns out he was a turkey in the field, that’s for the Swift Boat people to talk about. And in fact he was bad news, which is why every single CO and their command up through CINCPAC unanimously proclaimed him unfit for service. This has never happened before, even though Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and both Bush’s were Veterans.

Oh, and then there were the vicious attacks on Bush’s service. Again, vicious charges – AWOL, deserter, etc, etc. Please stand by while I pull out the world’ smallest violin, to play sad music for the poor Democratic Party which is happy to slander people with no evidence, but screams bloodly murder and sends out lawyere letters in an attempt to quash true attacks on themselves.

They were wusses in the Vietnam years and the Dewmocrats are still wusses.

  11. George Taylor says:

Well let’s see, so you think Kerry wasn’t wounded deep enough for a purple heart. Could be. At least he volunteered to serve under fire.

Currently we are commanded by a man who sat confused in front of children for seven long minutes after he was told this country was attacked. Sat there, confused, while 2 plane loads of terrorists were still in the air, and the Military and FAA had their wires crossed. At that point we still didn’t know if there were more attacks under way, but what did our great leader do then? He hightailed it to Nebraska. He made sure he was going to be safe. At least Kerry turned his boat, instantly, toward the enemy.

  12. cate says:

Did you want the PResident to run screaming from the room after being told about the terrorist attacks? I think its a bit ‘ironic’ how Kerry is saying he would have calmly excused himself from the room- when the man is on record saying that he and another Sen. watched the 2nd plane hit the WTC and sat PARALYZED for 40 minutes. 40 minutes.. not 7 minutes. Yeah- there is truly a guy who would have calmly told the children the president has to go.. Kerry is a complete liar.

  13. Steve says:

I was 10 yrs old during Viet Nam. I remember the protests, the nitely “scoreboard” from Walter Cronkite. I also remember Kerry & Hanoi Jane buddying around. For that alone Kerry should never of been even considered for office of any kind. Much less the highest office in the land.
I’ve said for years, “it’s obvious that the people of New England(New York included)are idiots & morons, just look at what & who they elect & re-elect to office!
They’ve given us the likes of Ted,Chuck, Hillary & yes, Kerry. And that’s just the Senate! They’ve given us Barney Franks, Bernie Sanders, you get the picture.
How the birthplace of our country can today send so many anti American, leftist, socialistic, Marxists is mind numbing. And they do it year after year after year. The same pandering, lieing, decieveing bunch of America hating eliteists.
Of course, this sharade would go nowhere, if not for these traitorous bunch of eliteists buds in the main stream media!
You want to see “useful fools” & downright dupes? Look to New England!!!

  14. Rubycon says:

So Kerry wants to play JFK? Someone wake me up when this boring remake movie gets to the Dallas/Dealey-Plaza scene. Who’s gonna play Oswald? Mr. O’Neill maybe?

  15. mary riley says:

It’s obvious from the pictures that these guy’s have been drinking a little too much beer, –for quite awhile. It was probably is such a fun loving brew-induced stupor that they thought this one up and now they’re trying to keep their heads above the foam. Is it true as McCain said, that behind all this is the same bunch who went after him when he ran againt the chicken hawk slacker George Bush! and friend of Carl Rove, —- the evil puppeteer behind the curtain????.

  16. Rubycon says:

Kerry Quote from 1971: “I did take part in free fire zones and I did take part in harassment interdiction fire. I did take part in search-and-destroy missions in which the houses of noncombatants were burned to the ground. And all of these, I find out later on, these acts are contrary to the Hague and Geneva Conventions and to the laws of warfare. So in that sense, anybody who took part in those, if you carry out the applications of the Nuremberg principles, is in fact guilty.”

    Translation:

The Facts: John Kerry took part in free fire zones, harassment interdiction fire, and burned the houses of noncombatants to the ground, in direct violation of the Hague and Geneva Conventions and the laws of warfare.

The Silly Defense Argument: He didn’t know it was a crime at the time. (When did ignorance of the law become a valid excuse? Where was John Kerry during “The Rules of Warfare” class during his military training? Was he AWOL?)

The Verdict: According to the Nuremberg principles, John Kerry is guilty of war crimes.
    —-
Then there’s the top commander of the North Vietnamese Army, General Giap, who cited the theatrical activities of John Kerry and his ilk as a vital link in the chain of events that led to the north’s “victory”. Can you say “aid and comfort to the enemy”?
    —-
    He’s for the war.
    No, he’s against the war.

    He’s for the funding.
No, wait, he’s against the funding.

He’s a war hero who defended America.
Or he committed atrocities and war crimes in a conflict we had no business being in.

I get dizzy trying to formulate a clear picture of how John Kerry is trying to portray himself; He flip-flops more than an olympic sprinter wearing sandals.
    —-
    Then there’s Bush:
    - Taliban, GONE.
    - Saddam, GONE.
    - Libya’s (Iraq’s?)WMD program, GONE.
    - Al Qaeda, SEVERLY DAMAGED.
    - Pakistan, WORKING WITH US NOW.
    - Iranian dictators, VERY SCARED AND READY TO DEAL.
    - France, OUTTED FOR THE ENEMY THAT THEY ARE.
    - U.N., the great gift bequeathed to us by Soviet spy Alger Hiss, DISREGARDED AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN YEARS AGO.

Seriously, Mary, what has Kerry done besides piss on everyone and everything he ever touched?

  17. Anyone who calls Bush a chickenhawk is way down in my book. My best friend was killed doing exactly the same thing Bush did. As a military aviator and Vietnam Veteran, I just want to say that your characterization of Bush is incorrect and offensive.

As for McCain’s charges, the answer is no. There is no puppetteer. These guys (all 254 of them) came together out of their distaste for John Kerry and what he did in Nam and especially when they came back.

The only connection to the 2000 business is that the PR firm, hired to set up the press conference that the press ignored, is the same as the one HIRED BY the clowns who went after McCain.

So what you have here is guilt by association. McCarthy would be proud of you.

As for your attacks on the three combat veterans n the picture, they are typical – can’t deal with the facts so instead, attack the people.

Your remarks, overall, are pretty pathetic, but that’s what I expect from people who imagine Bush is a chicken hawk and who imagine deep, dark hidden conspiracies.

  18. Michael Turley says:

Rubycon@aol.com made some very uninformed comments about things which he either knows nothing about or which he recieved inadequate training to comment upon and he obviously knows nothing about Swift training or our obligation to disciplined engagement of the enemy in Vietnam.

So you have any idea what interdiction fire is? And did you ever read the “Blue Book” containing the rules of engagement in a search and destroy mission?? Weren’t you forced to read and reread the Geneva Conventions and international laws of warfare in training? Who the hell trained you? Every squad leader had to know these tenants by heart. Hell, every Swift Boat sailor I served with had to know these tenants by heart. We were drilled on these as heavily as we were on survival at sere training.

It is sad that thse who have no idea of Swift training defend this PRETENDER [Kerry] on the basis of lack of facts. Look into his record in other campaigns and in Congress. His Congressional record is over 90% “Not Voting.” His last “labor” bill to be voted on was “NO” to protecting medical benefits and pension funds of empolyees. His only vote on the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste depository in Nevada was “YES” to the location. Yet at the UNLV Democratic Rally Tuesday, August 10th, he stood on stage and bragged that he would end the Yucca Mountain Project and support all of the needs of labor. This pathological, self promoting PRETENDER will say anything his audience wants to hear to gain the station for which he feels he was born. If Kerry is elected you will see the UN flag flying above our county’s and watch as America loses it’s sovereignty to the rule of third world nations which control the UN. If that is your idea of patriotism and what our forefathers injtended for the United States, then you are one sadly misdirected individual.

I have never, I repeat, NEVER, voted for a Republican candidate and I am going to be 60 years old before the election. I have voted for a few democrats over the years, though I admit not on a national level. I am a Constitutional purist, an agnostic and have voted mostly libertarian since I was old enough to vote. [and for those who don't get it, I don't drink and have never done drugs]

President Bush has signed a form 180 and released his military records to public scrutiny. John “The Pretender” Kerry refuses to sign a form 180, because doing so would reveal his lies. He knows this and posts his cc file [except those he has pulled from his website due to conflicting stories from his own lips] on his website. Whenever he is caught in his lies he adds another lie and pulls the other one from his website. Fact is that one only needs to read Kerry’s own books and his hired biographer, Brinkley’s, TOUR OF DUTY to see the lies on top of lies Kerry tells. Study his statements before Congess over the years and then his promises to audiences as compared to his recorded votes in Congress. Then come back and tell us that this PRETENDER is fit to be Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, enthroned in the office of the most powerful nation on the planet. Any American who truely investigates this charlatan would have to be a fool to vote for him to be their leader in any situation.

read ‘UNFIT FOR COMMAND,” research the allegations and evidence for yourself…[if you are not too lazy] and then vote your conscience [if you have one]. Remember, your children and grandchildren will have to live with your choice. Future generations will pay for what we do in November. And a coward in the field of battle is twice as hard to survive as enemy soldiers. Kerry is a sociopath of cunning feeding upon the fears of the uninformed. He is a classic pathological liar. Kerry tells of having his Christmas 1968 in Cambodia, “…seared, seared,” into his memory. When in fact Christmas 1968 there was a cease fire and he was actually over 50 miles away at a command which did not even close on the Cambodian border. He says the President Nixon was behind this, when Nixon had not even taken office. Fact is NO Swift Boats were even allowed into the area where Kerry claims to have gone and any Swifts which may have tried to go there would have been turned around by the Coast Guard and PBRs assuring that no such intrusion of the canal there was possible by either U.S. or enemy forces. In his book there is a an account of his looking for a USO show Christmas of 1968. Which Kerry are we to believe? I happen to believe honorable men of my units over a lying charlatan. Some of us served our country. A few others served themselves. Kerry is the later and there is no more dispecable creature on this earth than a traitor.

I have dared and many of my Swift Brothers have dared Kerry or his henchmen to sue for libel and slander. But the PRETENDER dares not have himself exposed to an open court examination of his lies. He knows as well as we do that his lies are only proped up by ignorance of the facts.

Be very careful what you wish for, because you and future generations will have to live with the consequences of your choices. I do not ask you to believe me or even “UNFIT FOR COMMAND.” What I will do is challenge you to investigate thoroughly your “hero” with an open mind. I am confident that any American who is not a socialist/communist will find that Kerry cannot be allowed to become President of this great and beautiful country. That is why I dedicated every dime this poor boy can muster to travelling this nation extensively, taking every opportunity to share the documented evidence of Kerry’s history of lies and deceptions. Check out the communist War Remnants Museum plaque honoring Kerry as a hero of the communist defeat of America and the next time Kerry calls himself a “Hero” ask him for which country. It is high time that Americans took off the blinders and took a look at the irrefutable facts.

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”
