Air America - Listeners?

Thu December 9th, 2004 13:01 MST

Air America - no, not the eponymous CIA subsidiary from the Vietnam War, but the lefty attempt at talk radio, made a little news today: they got some suckers (well, they called them “investors” - the sort of people the left despises) to drop in $13 million.

“With the new funding and our contracts signed, sealed and delivered, Air America has proven its ability to attract talent and investors,” Rhodes said.

Now, if they just had some listeners and advertisers, they might have a business. But don’t expect much of the left to understand that. Talent’s a bit on the short side too.

    Hi John,

I saw that bit, then remembered hearing some rather offensive ads on the San Diego oldies station touting their network (offensive unless you’re a lefty, I suppose). I have no doubt they will have a hard time attracting any more audience than they did the last time.

I’m going back about two in your series, but I was wondering if there is a good, catchy phrase to both accurately and derisively describe what you called “Mainstream Media”? I rather like Rush’s “Legacy Media”, but perhaps the computer connotation is counter-intuitive..

Don’t knock it ’til you’ve listened to it. It’s an invalid cheap shot to say they are short of talent.
The daily “Liberal Agenda”, transmitted directly from the Streisand compound,( and presumably issued by Babs herself,) is quite funny. And why didn’t “Hartley” describe specifically what was found “offensive”?
Honestly, there are some Right Wing Tinfoil Hat types showing up around here…paranoid about Commies and Infidels around every corner.
    Just relax! (Hope this helps.)

Sorry guys about the difficulty of commenting. I hope to fix that when I get home (I am currently at an internet bar in Cay Caulker, Belize.)

Even worse, for some reason today I can’t get at the mail which is apparently full (grrrr… I hate spammers.)

Regarding Air America, it’s a farce. It is first network I know of that has been formed with the purpose of spreading a particular political view.

The fundamental problem for it is that liberals don’t need it to get liberal broadcast news - all they have to is turn on a TV or radio to an ordinary station or NPR. That is a natural limit on the market. I may work in a few blue cities, but that’s it.

On the other conservative talk radio, which is not a network and which grew by example rather than central control, filled a huge void: the truth on many subjects was missing from the main stream media (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS although news hour isn’t too bad, NPR, New York Times, Washinton Post, AP and Reuters… for a start).

So conservative talk radio grew rapidly and is widespres. Notice that Air America is not showing a similar growth, and there are few imitations. Libaugh produced hundreds or thousands of imitators.

So I will happily watch liberals waste their money supporting their propaganda machine, which will never earn its way economically.

    Hi Y’all,

I know you’re back now, John! (And I think I understand the rabies reference..)
What was offensive? - the promo started out something like: “Up until now, talk radio has been barren and lifeless…” you can probably fill in the rest.. interestingly, they didn’t use the “Air America” line..
