Many a Miserable Failure on the left have been GoogleBombing to cause George Bush to show up at the top of a google search for Miserable Failure. This article is here simply to counter that silly approach with a different target.
I doubt it will work… the left tends to be far more determined with this sort of silly antic.

This article was posted to provide a focus for the inevitable Vietnam references that turn up in response to other Useful Fools articles. This is the place to fight out the old fight, if you are a reader of this blog.
Left wing opinion, widely reflected today in History courses and the media, is that the US lost a war in Vietnam against a local, popular guerilla movement (the Viet Cong). Furthermore, it is asserted that the people in South Vietnam wanted to re-unite with the North under communism. Some have argued that the US had nefarious motives (profit, oil, etc) in its war in Vietnam. It is assumed that the US was defeated in the field of battle by this movement.
All of that is incorrect.

Many conservatives are surprised at how many previously non-political organizations (such as mainstream protestant churches) have adopted strongly left wing attitudes. Others are surprised at how formerly single purpose moderate organizations (such as conservation organizations) have become radical in their original purpose and have issued leftist pronouncements far outside of their organizational interest.
Hence we have radical environmentalists taking over conservation organizations, professional organizations making anti-war, pro-abortion and anti-conservative statements which have nothing to do with their goals (or for that matter, with the interests of their original membership).

John Ray comments on a recent study showing that Bosnian refugees who came to Britain to escape the war ended up worse-off psychologically than those who stayed.
Perhaps it was because they were subject to the rapidly increasing violent crime rate in Britain!

Fox News is reporting that Attorney General John Ashcroft is ordering all federal prosecutors to apply the strongest charges (in terms of sentencing) in all criminal cases..
If this is true, then Ashcroft has to go. This would be “justice” by bureaucracy, with no room for judgement or common sense. Sentences have ranges for a reason, and prosecutors have discretion to choose whether to charge with a greater or lesser offense for the same reason: so the punishment will best fit the crime.
Ashcroft has already hurt the fight against terror by failing to adequately defend the Patriot Act. While the opponents of the act have hurled lies and hysterical exaggerations against it, Ashcroft has not done nearly enough to show the other side. His tour around the country involves only speaking to the converted - law enforcement personnel - when he should be on talk shows defending himself in widely seen public fora. His visible persona has been too smug and not open to criticism. He apparently has no understanding of how many in the public feel, of the lies they have been told, and of the extreme tactics that his opponents are taking. Even the name of the act shows a political blindness - the left has long ago caused people to associate the word “patriot” with tyranny, and no amount of reasoning (much less the total lack of defense from Ashcroft) can change that.
This man has become a liability to the Bush administration and to the war on terror. The President needs to throw him out - ASAP!

Samizdata says it better than I ever could. Be sure and click on the multimedia remembrance if you haven’t seen it before. It is the most powerful media presentation I have ever seen on the net.
At this precise hour and date two years ago an event changed history and seared eternal anger into the American soul. This flash multimedia presentation is the best remembrance I have found to date. It came out shortly after and I have from time to time reminded people of it.
… Make sure you have tissue handy when you watch and listen. If you are an American, you will need them.
On some far star a millennium hence, our descendants will pause and remember this date.
We will never forgive and we will never forget.
And let me add… the people who inflicted this horrible tragedy upon us are still out there with their malevolent goals ( New Zealand Herald ):
We announce there will be new attacks inside and outside which would make America forget the attacks of September 11 (2001).
But we will never forget! And if we are attacked again, our response will make our current effort look tame. There will be no hiding from us. International borders will no longer slow us down. We will use any weapons we need. We are at war, even if we have barely shown our teeth so far. The 7th century barbarians who wish to attack us should think back to Guadalcanal, to Normandy, to Dresden, to Iwo Jima and to Hiroshima - and realize that if necessary, we will do that much and more.

People often cite the ancient Chinese curse “May you live in interesting times” (the curse is neither ancient nor Chinese!).
In any case, next week has higher potential than normal for some unpleasant and “interesting” events:

Jon Ray points out that a big influence on political orientation is genetic (the Useful Fools gene, known to geneticists as Fool1):
There has been a recent claim that birth-order determines whether or not you are conservative or liberal. The evidence on birth-order effects has always shown them to be very slight however. The big influence on political orientation is genetic. The twin studies show that your politics are even more strongly inherited than how tall you are. You are either born with the personality needs that make you a Leftist or you are not. That is why arguing with Leftists is generally so futile. Only aging makes them more conservative, usually.
I had long suspected that “progressive” thinking is a result of a cognitive disorder. Now I have proof!
