The idiotic 1994 “assault weapon” ban will sunset next year (shhh… don’t tell the lefties). This law, passed in 1994 with the help of dishonest and just plain ignorant media, bans weapons that look evil.
Smallest Minority discovered the following picture of a gun model to be released immediately upon the expiration of the law. I want mine in titanium.

Fox News Reports: The IAEA has declared a “radiological emergency” based on the theft of “strategic quantities” of radioactive Americium in Nigeria - a country with a significant Muslim population and a history of Islamicist violence.
Presumable the terms “strategic quantities” means that enough has been stolen to be useful for one or more radiological bomb(s).

DEBKAfile, an odd Israeli web site that clearly has deep intelligence connections, reports:
“US State Department warns Japan to expect terror attacks on its soil, advises Tokyo that Iraq has passed bio-chemical weapons to terrorists groups.”
I have read Debka regularly for many months, and they are frequently the first to post important news. Often they beat the mainstream media by weeks to months.
On the other hand, some of their stories have been, well, not quite believable. I suspect they may be an occasional disinformation outlet for Mossad, but most of their stuff checks out.
Your mileage may vary.

As war with Iraq approaches, there are reports circulating about whether Iraq has weaponized smallpox.
Today there exists no solid evidence for that proposition. However, the indirect evidence is very alarming…

According to the Guardian, quoting classified papers obtained by activists (traitors?) in the US, the Bush Administration is discussing a new generation of nuclear weapons, including “mini-nukes,” “bunker-busters” and “neutron bombs.”

The Washington Times’ Bill Gertz reports that tons of sodium cyanide were shipped this month from Germany to North Korea. Ironically, it travelled in the same ship that had been captured in December by the Spanish and US and found to be carrying Scuds. The shipment is in violation of a chemical control coalition agreement.
One would think that the Germans, of all people, would avoid supporting chemical weapons! Have they forgotten Auschwitz?

Colin Powell before the UN today: “Iraq has the wherewithall to produce smallpox.”
This is the first official statement that Iraq actually has smallpox. Not said is that if they do, they also have the means to create a virus lethal enough to be called a “doomsday weapon.” They have skilled scientists, and are known to test their agents on human subjects. Genetic modification of poxviruses is easy and routine in the world of virology. Poxvirus genetic engineering kits are available for under $1000.
A genetically engineered smallpox would likely be undeterred by vaccination of potential victims, and if it contains the Interleukin-4 gene, the virus could be 100% lethal to humans.
Research in mice has demonstrated that a related pox-virus, with the IL-4 gene added, is a “super-virus” which suppresses the immune defense.
“Strikingly, infection of recently immunized genetically resistant mice with the virus expressing IL-4 also resulted in significant mortality due to fulminant mousepox.”
In other words, a strain of mice normally resistant to mousepox, which had also been vaccinated, succumbed to this virus. This research so alarmed the scientific community that debates continue on whether it should have been published.
It is likely that a smallpox virus similarly engineered could be literally a “doomsday bug.” Such a virus would wipe out almost all human life on earth.
If Saddam has smallpox capability, as Secretary Powell says, then Saddam has this virus!

While the press tends to focus on the nuclear threat, it is clear that the administration is extremely worried about the biological weapons threat. This is made even more clear by the budget request for six billions dollars to fight bioterrorism. Six billion is a heck of a lot of money to earmark for a threat that nobody took seriously just two years ago!
The crux of the threat is contagious bological agents… bugs that grow and spread from person to person. The amount of damage a non-infectious agent (anthrax, botox, etc) is similar to that of chemical weapons - those who get exposed suffer, but nobody else (or very few) get sick.
An infectious agent, however, is the gift that keeps on giving. Smallpox, for example, typically infects from 4 to 20 people for each original case (the real value of that number is hard to determine, but absolutely crucial in determining whether an outbreak can be contained).
Genetically engineered agents can be even worse - it is probably easy to create an agent that nobody has immunity to and for which no vaccine exists. A recent experiment in Australia, since replicated in the US, demonstrated a simple modification to pox viruses which make them 100% lethal and extremely vaccine resistant!

Smallpox was eradicated to make soviet weapons more deadly!
This is a reasonable conclusion to be drawn from recent evidence about the smallpox eradication effort. More precisely, the Soviet contribution to smallpox eradication, which was crucial to the effort, was motivated by their biological weapons goals.

While much attention has been paid to nuclear and chemical weapons, the biggest terrorist threat to the United States is biological. It is not surprising that the government says little about this, because at this time there is not much we can do about it.
